The Gulf of Maine Aquarium was incorporated in 1968 as The Research Institute of the Gulf of Maine. In 1978, the organization was re-named the Gulf of Maine Aquarium (GMA). Its goals were to teach about aquatic environments, facilitate marine research, and build a public aquarium. Today the Gulf of Maine Aquarium (GMA) continues to be guided by a three-part mission:
| Educate: |
Teach Maine residents and visitors about Maine's aquatic resources;
|
| Convene: |
Provide a neutral forum for diverse marine stakeholders (including fishermen and scientists) to discuss, research, and resolve aquatic resource conflicts;
|
| Research: |
Facilitate marine research in the Gulf of Maine and its watershed. |
